Dichlobenil, the active ingredient in Midstream GSR has been withdrawn from sale by the European Union under the Plant Protection Products Directive. The last date for use is 18th March 2010.

This date does not cover the whole application period, and it is likely that applications made so early next year will not be as effective as if they had been applied later.  However, some species will benefit from early application, especially Nymphoides peltata and Potamogeton natans,  but for most other rooted submerged species the risk of poor control is increased by this use up date.

Midstream GSR does give up to 3 or 4 years control from one application, unlike other formulations, so am ear;y application in 2010 will give some respite until other techniques are available.

Midstream GSR is the old Casoron GSR under a new name.  It has been specifically designed for aquatic use, as it delivers the herbicide to the root zone where it is taken up by susceptible plants.  Most other dichlobenil formulations are only 6.75% active ingredient, and most of the herbicide dissolved into the water column before the granule reaches the sediment, which is why control of rooted species is less effective in deep water with other products.

There may be a replacement aquatic herbicide in the future, but unless it is extremely safe to aquatic organisms, and has other terrestrial uses, it will not be approved for aquatic use.   One active we are looking at is Imazamox, contained in the  BASF product Clearcast, which has shown very good efficacy and environmental safety in trials in the USA.
